JAE 2009 APPEAL SYSTEM

Hi all, just to clarify some things with regards to the appeal system for JAE:

1. In order to appeal into AMS via the online MOE system, you would need to have met the 2009 JAE cut-off point of 10. Only then would the course be offered to you as one of your choices for appeals.

If you are really interested and meet the cut-off point but was not posted into AMS, do consider appealing. 

2. If you do not meet the cut-off point, the option to appeal for AMS would not be available for you under the online system. However, if you still feel strongly about the course and would really like to appeal, you might want to write in.

Direct your letter to the Temasek Polytechnic's Registrar's Office. 

You might want to include in the letter several reasons why they should take you in. This would increase your chances. The admissions division of the registrar's office would look into the matter. Based on merit and seat availability, they will handle the application accordingly. You might be called in for an interview at this phase.

3. You may want to come down to TP to discuss your chances of getting in. This however is only during office hours on working days. Which leaves only Monday & Tuesday. You might want to consider calling up our course manager/emailing him over the weekend. Contact details can be found at the sidebar.

4. This news just in from the lecturers: The diploma would definitely be opening up an additional class to cater to the demand. This would mean additional seats for interested students.

Subject to seat availability, we will do our best to admit students who are appealing. Do understand though that we are only able to offer a certain number of seats after which might put a strain on the resources. 

So while we encourage all interested students to appeal for this course, do carefully consider your other appeal choices. This concerns your future and we hope to see everyone posted to a good course with relevant career prospects. Please make good use of this second chance that you're given.

Log into the JAE Appeal Website

Under section 3, there will be a drop down menu with a list of all the courses you're eligible for. You are allowed to select up to 3 polytechnic diploma courses for which you meet the minimum entry requirements and the 2009 course cut-off points.

Alternatively, you may also directly come down to Temasek Polytechnic's Auditorium Foyer. 

Note: Students enrolled into JC/MI are still required to report to their respective schools while waiting for appeal. Otherwise, your place there would be forfeited.

1st AMS Reception @ Air Force Museum on 7th Jan 2009


Hi everyone.

A day before the Temasek Polytechnic Open House on the 8th, the cohort had a mini gathering at the Officers' Mess at the Air Force Museum. Being 1st time in an Officers' Mess, the gathering was considered to be an eye-opener for everyone. The Reception was organised by the lecturers for the students for the excellent work in the past year and motivation for all in the year to come, especially then-Open House and JAE.

The reception was declared by Mr Paul Yap, Course Manager of AMS and A token of Appreciation was presented to Ex-Course Manager, Mr Chan Kim Kai for his dedication of bringing up AMS from a little course to what we are now.

Another token of appreciation was presented to the 2nd BlackBox Committee for their hardwork during their term of service. The AMS logo and the course tee were also launched during the Reception.

After the reception, the students were treated to a guided tour by the guides at the Air Force Museum which they enjoyed very much.

Hey everyone! Happy Chinese New Year from all of us here at AMS. May you have a prosperous year ahead. Have fun collecting hongbaos! &On behalf of all the students, thank  you lecturers for all the delicious oranges.

&Congratulations to the AMS team, Street45, who participated in the annual  'TPSU League Cup Series'. The team, compromising of five Year 1s and a mutual friend emerged third in the recent league series after a successful stint in last year's 'Director's Cup'.

Aerospace and clean energy courses rolled out as interest grows

AS THE popularity of traditional engineering courses wanes, Singapore polytechnics are rolling out programmes this year in newly popular fields such as clean energy and aeronautical engineering.

Polytechnic lecturers said interest in these disciplines is booming, in part because of the glamour of the jobs but largely because the clean energy and aerospace industries are flowering amid a bonanza of investment.

About 10,000 jobs will be created when the $60 million Seletar Aerospace Park is completed in 2018.

With heavy government investments, the clean energy industry is expected to bring Singapore $1.7 billion a year in gross domestic product and create 7,000 jobs by 2015.

'Students can find jobs at the many international companies which will be based here. They have opportunities to work with world-class technology and also travel overseas,' said Mr Ho Hooi Min, senior director of Nanyang Polytechnic's (NYP) school of engineering.

The courses are drawing some of the top engineering students at the expense of programmes like electrical and mechanical engineering.

Applications to those courses have been falling in Singapore and around the world since the 1980s, said Dr Dave Chong, director of Singapore Polytechnic's school of electrical and electronics engineering.

The change represents a fundamental shift in the attitudes of students, said Mr Wong Cho Loo, who manages Temasek Polytechnic's microelectronics and clean energy courses.

'Traditional engineering jobs are less glamorous than those in the clean energy sector, which is talked about so much now, and aerospace engineering because it deals with flying.'

With all five polytechnics offering courses in clean energy and aerospace engineering, each one is hoping to attract the best students by creating niche programmes.

Students enrolled in NYP's diploma in aeronautical and aerospace technology will be able to intern at engine-maker Rolls-Royce's future plant in Singapore and factories in Germany and Britain.

Republic Polytechnic is also in talks with companies to provide internships for students enrolled in the diploma in aerospace engineering quality systems.

Temasek Polytechnic houses the only clean energy centre located in an education institution. There, students can work with companies on renewable energy technologies such as fuel cells, hydropower and biofuels.

Ngee Ann Polytechnic clean energy management diploma students will spend a semester in Germany, where they will work with other international students to design and build a solar car.

Their counterparts at Singapore Polytechnic can pursue a renewable energy engineering degree programme in Australia.

These opportunities are catching the eye of future students.

Muhammad Noor Iman Abdul Salam, a Secondary 3 student, attended a three-hour workshop in aerospace technology at NYP in October last year.

He said: 'I want to study aerospace engineering at NYP. It is exciting to be able to work with planes and I think I will be able to earn a good salary. I will study hard to make sure I can get in.'

CERTIFICATE PROGRAMME - More than just a diploma. 

Interested in Temasek Polytechnic's Diploma in Aviation Management and Services yet also wish to try your hand in Psychology? Unable to decide between two different courses offered in Temasek Poly?

We've the perfect solution for you!

In 2008, TP launched it's Certificate Program to provide greater recognition to TP students. This would enable the more capable students to graduate with more than 1 set of qualification during their 3-year stint.

Freshmen who have performed at the top 10% of each diploma course will receive an email at the end of Semester 1.1, inviting them to apply for the Certificate Programme. If you decide to take up the invitation, you would have to indicate your preferences out of the eight clusters offered:

2. Certificate in Cross-Cultural Studies
   
3. Certificate in Design Fundamentals
   
4. Certificate in Digital Literacies
   
5. Certificate in Language & Culture (French & Japanese)

FLYING IN THE SKIES - no longer just a dream.

To those interested in flying, here are some good news for you! AMS students do indeed get the opportunities to experience both real and simulated flights! 

Flight Experience Singapore

Experience the full joy of flying. Start with a flight around your local airport, including take-off and landing. Fly circuits to sharpen your skills or navigate your way to a nearby regional airport. Early last year, all the Year 1s got the chance to sit in the cockpit of a jet aircraft simulator. We got to apply concepts like theories of flights and make use of all the navigational aids, just like a real pilot!

Light Aircraft Flight Experience

Under the module Principles of Aeronautical Science, our students were given a rare opportunity to experience real-life flying in a light aircraft at Nusajaya Flight Park at Johor Bahru. Sitting in the captain's seat, we got the chance to control the aircraft for a huge part of the flight.

Through all these, students could apply classroom concepts into the real world of flying. We were able to relate the concepts into something real, which makes it much easier when studying for the module's tests & exams!

Good morning everyone! Before I start on anything, a huge thank you to all of you who've been coming to this blog and leaving tags for us.

So what happens after AMS?

For those who want to pursue a degree, there's absolutely no need to worry! Students may further their studies in aviation management at renowned aviation universities in Australia, New Zealand, the UK, and USA. For those interested in opportunities a little closer to home, we have good news for you!

AMS STUDENTS HAVE ADVANCED STANDING WITH THE WORLD'S NO 1 AERONAUTICAL UNIVERSITY.

Temasek Polytechnic signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in February 2008 to offer degree programmes in the aviation field with Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU), the world's largest and most established university specialising in aviation and aerospace training.

Upcoming partnership between Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and Temasek Polytechnic will give AMS students up to 2 years of advanced standing in ERAU's B.Sc Aviation Business Administration degree programme.

The Aviation Business Administration programme is designed to prepare students for key staff, operational, and executive positions within various segments of civilian and military aviation or the business community.

AMS students will be able to apply for direct entry to the 3rd year of this four year degree programme!

The degree programmes, to be conducted at Temasek Polytechnic Campus, will be jointly taught by instructors from Temasek Engineering School and ERAU.

This means...

3 years AMS + 2 years ERAU = 1 Degree obtained!

Even faster than the usual JC routes! &MORE GOOD NEWS!

AMS is working towards getting the Singapore Government's Foreign Speciliased Institute (FSI) programme for this degree programme. Under the FSI programme, Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents will pay tution fees at local universities rates.

In other words, Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents will pay subsided and affordable tution fees for the course of this degree programme!

“What is your passion?” For me, my passion lies in aviation and AMS gave me the perfect platform to explore this passion. From the video, I’m sure you can tell that I love the thought of being able to fly (in a plane, of course!). This course also gives us the opportunity to learn on the different components that makes commercial flights possible.

Learning is made much more enjoyable with our great bunch of lecturers. They are simply the best! Honestly speaking, I cannot imagine myself studying elsewhere with a better diploma programme, taught by a better team of lecturers, in a better environment. This is where I wanna be and I am glad I had chosen this path.

AMS as your first choice? You betcha!

AMS Luncheon 2009

Hello there! There's been a lot of talk going round on the release date for O level results but hey, there've been no updates on the MOE website yet. So don't get all jittery by what the last Tom / Dick / Harry you saw said.

An expert practitioner from the industry and our lecturers and students will be present to share their experiences and answer your queries. You can also use this chance to interact with AMS students to get inside scoops on what it's like being in AMS.

"Flying is the second greatest thrill known to man. Landing is the first! 

Well, I never really understood that before I learned to fly. And yes, I do miss my flying days. And landings in faraway places. The challenge and achievement of landing an aircraft is one that balances innumerable factors. You just have to be in the seat to really understand what it's like! In fact, it's pretty much like bringing a class through in AMS. It's partly a flight experience, a very positive one.

And I realised nothing is more enriching for me, than having the opportunity to share those experiences and feelings with my students. I am truly blessed - for the opportunities that I've had. And for all the experiences to come at AMS.

Come and experience it all, here at AMS."

"I’ve always wanted to be part of the aviation industry ever since I was a young boy. 

I used to really enjoy watching planes near the airport and when I realised that Temasek Polytechnic had set up a diploma in Aviation Management and Services, I knew that this was the place for me!

Aviation Management and Services by far has provided me with in-depth knowledge in aviation and I’m confident that this course will provide me with more knowledge and keep me occupied with more fun-filled activities in the coming years."
